I am honored to be NOCCS’s AP teacher once again. The APChinese Language and Culture Course is equivalent to a 4th semestercollege course. The course and exam incorporate Chinese cultural byreading, writing, speaking, and listening to the language. It is a coursethat is engaging and interactive with 80% instructional time devotedto speaking and listening and most students have a lot of fun in class.Every year, students go through great length to study and prepare for thetest. I don’t think students should study Chinese for the sake of doingwell on AP exam, but it provides students and teachers a short termgoal and a mile stone that is recognized nationwide. Chinese schoolstudents, for the longest time did not have standards as to which class isequivalent to which level, can now say, “I did well in AP Chinese, so myChinese is pretty good.”
